Mermaid Hair Tutorials
If those amazing photos of vibrant blue, green and purple hair have stopped you mid-scroll on Instagram, you're not alone. Mermaid hair is a thing and it's catching on like crazy. While this daring hair look is certainly not for the faint of heart, it's a bold and fashion forward hairstyle for spring. Mermaid hair doesn't necessarily mean dyeing your hair either. Mermaids are known for their super-long, waist-grazing locks, which means either growing your hair out or getting extensions this spring. Also, mermaid hair translates into loose waves and cool braids, so even if you don't want to bleach your hair or grow it to Rapunzel lengths, you can still get in on the mermaid hair trend. Here, some tips on how to make a splash with a mermaid-inspired mane.

The Look: Mermaid Waves
Sexy, beachy waves will never go out of style. Loose and pretty waves look beautiful on pretty much everyone. Whether your hair is super long or shoulder-length, creating feminine waves is easy to do with the right tools. Starting with dry hair (we find hair that was washed the day before works best), gather the top half of hair into a bun and secure with a clip. Hold a 1-inch curling wand with no clip downward and wrap a section of hair around the barrel. Repeat this throughout the hair. Remove the clip and continue this method but only wrap the bottom section of hair around the wand when you're working with the top layer of hair. You don't want the roots to be curled. Run fingers through hair to help loosen the curls and spray lightly with a medium hold hairspray. Try: HSI Professional Groover Tapered 1" Curling Wand

Mermaid Braids

The Look: Mermaid Braids
Braids are an adorable hair option and the ultimate lazy hairstyle. They're also a great way to do mermaid style without any commitment. This look involves a thicker braid, which requires some secret tips. Don't worry, we're going to share them!

Tips for thicker looking braids:

  • Pull the braid apart! This is pretty simple, yet creates a big impact. After you're done braiding, simply pull at each section of braid to make it look thicker. You don't want the braid to fall apart, so be gentle, but pulling at it, you're essentially flattening it, which makes it appear thicker.
  • Use dry shampoo in hair before braiding. Hair that has a slightly dirtier feel will be easier to pull at and yet keep it in place.
  •  Use a volumizing foam before blow-drying hair to make it appear thicker.
  • Leave unbraided ends of hair a bit longer than you would normally, this allows the braided part to be pulled apart easier.

The Look: Twisted Hair
We love the look of twisted--not curled--hair. Imagine how a mermaid would look if she just came out of the sea. Her hair would not be perfect, but rather a tad messy and haphazard looking. To get the twisted hair look, use a curling wand to curl the hair in the mid shaft only, leaving ends and roots straight and untouched. Try HSI Groover Curling Wand.

The Look: Candy Colored Highlights
Don't try this look at home! We highly recommend visiting a talented colorist in your area for a mermaid-inspired dye job. As gorgeous as this candy-colored style is, it does require some maintenance and a whole lot of at-home care. Bleaching hair can be seriously damaging, which is why you need to use deeply conditioning hair products on the reg. Try HSI Argan Oil Leave-In Hair Treatment.
