Scrunching – How to Curl your Hair without a Hair Wand Set

by HSI Professional | Jul 22 2017

Admittedly, using a hair wand set is probably the best way to get curls, but you might not have time for that, or maybe you’re staying somewhere, and don’t have access to a hair styling wand. Either way, you need curls, and you’re going to find a way to get them. Don’t worry, there are definitely ways to get the job done and it doesn’t need to be difficult. You know as well as we do that wavy locks are all the rage, and if your goal is to find an easy hairstyle that’ll rock the room, then scrunching is, without a doubt, the direction that you want to take things.

To put it simply, scrunching allows you to achieve a curl by literally pressing the locks with your hands in combination with a styling product. Remember, different types of hair are going to result in different types of scrunches, so don’t expect yours to turn out exactly like the picture – instead, create your own unique style, and one that you can be proud of.

Curls Without the Hair Wand Set

Follow these steps to get the perfect scrunching action and a hairstyle that you can rock just about anywhere.

Step 1

The first step in this process is going to be making sure that you wash and condition your hair. This goes for any hairstyle that you want to try, as you don’t want to try out anything with dirty hair. Why? Because it’s never going to look good if you skip out on the washing! Also, do make sure that you scrunch we hair, as if you scrunch it dry, it’s just going to look frizzy. When you do wash your hair, make sure to use a volumizing shampoo as this will give much better results.

Step 2

Now you’re going to want to get your hair set up in the right style, just as you would if you were using any professional curling wands. This is probably the hardest step because you’ll need to use clips and ties. Just remember, you don’t have to make it perfect because scrunched hair is meant to be more of a messy look. In other words, it doesn’t have to be orderly at all.

Step 3

When your hair is completely washed, you can towel dry, and squeeze out any excess water with your hands. Do so in a scrunching manner, and this will start to lay the foundation for your look. Just make sure that you’re scrunching rather than rubbing, as rubbing wet hair will cause damage. Additionally, don’t use a hair dryer as this will ensure that you won’t get the result you want.

Step 4

Once your hair has been towel dried, you will want to move on to a curl enhancing the product, similar to what you would do if you were planning to use a curling wand set. The enhancing product can come in many different forms which include:
  • Mousse
  • Gel
  • Serum
  • Spray

The most preferred method here is mousse as it adds texture and does a better job of holding the hair, but as always, it is going to be entirely up to you. When you are applying mousse, we recommend that you use a single squirt from your pump. Then, apply it to the ends of your hair along with the mid-lengths, just make sure that you’re never applying it to your roots as this could make the hair look greasy.

Step 5

Use your hands to scrunch the hair by holding a small section and crumpling upward toward the scalp.

Step 6

Allow your hair to dry naturally and do NOT comb! Until the hair is fully dry, continue scrunching every five to ten minutes. Getting a perfect scrunch is an art form but it doesn’t’ take long to master. Head to the bathroom and try out your new style! The summer isn’t quite over yet, and you don’t need a professional hair curler to look great the next time you head out into the wild.
