The curly hair trend is only getting bigger, and more and more curly girls are looking for answers on how to deal with their unique hair type. In order to keep you curls beautiful and healthy, there are a few tips and tricks you need to know:
Figure out your curl type
When it comes to naturally curly hair, there is a lot of confusion. But it’s important to know that not all curls are created the same! Different patterns and types of curls require different styling and maintenance routines, so it is a good idea to figure out your curl type early on.
Know your ingredients
While there is no general rule about which ingredients work best for curly hair, many of us curly girls prefer to minimize the use of silicones in our hair care routine. There are tons of hair product terms that get thrown around, and many of us don’t really know what they mean. Once you figure out your curl type, do you research to figure out the best hair product for you. To play it safe, use a haircare brand that is generally good for all curl types like the HSI Argan Oil wet line.
Pre-poo don’t shampoo
Pre-poo or “no-poo” as some like to call it, basically means that you use little or no shampoo when washing your hair, only conditioner and/or carrier oil. By doing so, you keep more of the essential moisture that natural hair needs. You can create your own pre-poo with your favorite conditioner and a carrier oil such as Argan Oil or Coconut Oil.
Use a diffuser
If you’re a curly-haired girl and you need to dry your hair, be sure to use a diffuser to to evenly distribute the heat. This will help minimize frizz and overheating, which is great for naturally curly hair. If you don’t have a diffuser, use a blow dryer with Heat Balance technology which has a similar effect and won’t damage your curls.
Be brand loyal
Even though we curlies all like to mix things up, the truth is that products in the same brand are designed to work best together. Because curly hair typically requires more products than other hair types, it’s beneficial to buy all your haircare products from the same brand once you find one that works for you.
Eat good food
Healthy hair starts with what you eat! Foods such as whole grains, superfruits, dark green vegetables, low-fat dairy and lean proteins like fish will help keep your hair healthy from the inside out.
Trim your ends
Textured hair becomes frayed more easily than other hair types, so a trip to the salon every now and then might be necessary. Most stylists recommend that curly girls trim their hair every 6-8 weeks. This will help keep your hair looking full and healthy! Just remember that curly hair can shrink up to 30% and coily hair up to 75%, so it may be better to request that your stylist cut your hair while it is dry. That way you will know exactly what length it will be before you chop.
Seal with Argan Oil
Humidity and frizz are the enemy of any curly girl. It’s good the have a heat protector like HSI Argan Oil to help seal the cuticle of each hair so humidity can’t get in. You only need a tiny dime-sized portion of to do the trick, plus it also acts as a sunscreen for your hair!
