The Top Mistakes You’re Making with Gray Hair
The time has finally come: you’re growing gray hair and you need to address it as quickly as possible. Maybe you’ve decided to let it stick around, embracing your natural hair color, and perhaps becoming closer to the true you. We hate to break it to you, but it’s not a low maintenance path, and you’ll still need to break out the ceramic flat iron from time to time. We’re going to go over a few major mistakes that many people still make when they’re dealing with their gray hair.
Mistake 1: Heavy Layers makes More work for your Ceramic Flat Iron and You
The last thing that you want to do is make more work for yourself, and heavy layers at the salon can do just that. You’ve probably heard that the face framing layers are far more flattering than a one-length cut, and you’re right in that it can hide the signs of aging to an extent, but if you have gray hair, you don’t want to choose layers. You’re going to have extra texture, and it will actually highlight the coarse, wiry hair structure. In addition to that, it will scatter light, which makes your hair look a lot less sleek. If possible, ask for a precision cut with less layering.
Mistake 2: Your Shower Water isn’t Properly Filtered
This is kind of a no-brainer, even if you don’t have gray hair. Hard water is going to make your hair look brassy, or even dingy. The same will go for any chlorine in your water, and so we strongly recommend that you switch out your showerhead for one that can filter chlorine and heavy metals.
Mistake 3: You’re Not Prepared for the Pool
Pools are full of water, which is great in the summer, but they’re also full of chlorine, and that’s going to be bad news for your hair, to put it lightly. If you’re heading down to the pull this summer, make sure you use a leave-in conditioner on your damp hair to ensure that you’re creating a barrier against the moisture. Also remember that by dampening your hair before you hop into the pool, you are ensuring that it cannot soak up additional water, which includes the chlorine.
Mistake 4: You have Something Against Hair Oils
We kid, of course, but there seem to be quite a few people who don’t want to use hair oil, and that can be a bit of a problem. Without hair oil, your grays are going to be much coarser, your hair will be dryer, and overall, it will be more wiry. Using a few drops of hair oil per day can really help to bring out the best in your grays.
Mistake 5: You’re Not Using the Right Styling Tools
You might have a great ceramic flat iron, among other things, but you also need to take a look at the brush that you’re using. If you’ve been using a paddle brush for your entire life, then it’s time to set it aside and go with a boar bristle brush. The bristle will grip every strand firmly rather than simply passing through. Ultimately, you’re going to have to start treating your hair entirely differently. It’s definitely going to be a change for you, but at the end of the day, once you’re used to it, you’re going to love your it. You can even still use your ceramic iron!
